Volkswagen Atlas 2025: A Master in Disguise

Volkswagen serves as the gateway to the larger family of brands under the same name, including Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini. At first glance, these brands might seem unrelated to Volkswagen, but that's not entirely true. Technologies and manufacturing processes developed to meet the stringent standards of these other brands are also found in the Volkswagen Atlas. In case you didn't know, the Atlas shares some of its DNA with the Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne, and even the Lamborghini Urus, which is what makes it such an interesting vehicle.

The Volkswagen Atlas underwent a major redesign last year, meaning the updates for 2025 are subtler. These include minor equipment improvements and the addition of new colors. Otherwise, the German automaker's SUV retains all the features that make it so appealing—an undoubtedly good thing.

Trim Levels and Pricing

Pricing for the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas has not yet been announced as of this writing, so we'll base it on the 2024 model. In theory, no major changes are expected. The range begins with the Comfortline trim, which serves as the entry-level model, starting at $52,260. Those familiar with Volkswagen know this isn't a true base version, as the Trendline trim typically fills that role in other models. Next is the Peak Edition, priced at $56,260, which features a more rugged, off-road look. For a more upscale design and premium options, the Highline trim starts at $59,260. At the top of the lineup is the Exceline trim, priced at $62,260, offering 21-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display.

Category and Rivals

The Volkswagen Atlas is well-priced compared to its competitors, some of which can cost nearly twice as much. The German SUV offers a refined driving experience and a generally elevated feel, almost like being in a luxury vehicle.

Key Competitors: Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Grand Highlander.

Design and Technology

Elegance and presence define the Atlas's exterior aesthetic. Volkswagen opted for a cleaner, less provocative design than many of its competitors, which I personally find appealing—and I'm sure many of you will agree. The Atlas commands respect with its sophisticated lighting and massive wheels.

The interior is perhaps the model's only weak point in terms of design—particularly the dashboard and steering wheel. While material quality is excellent, the design is somewhat simplistic. Fortunately, Volkswagen makes up for this with its technology. The Atlas infotainment system is among the most enjoyable to use, and the digital instrument cluster is clear and visually impressive in certain modes. Additionally, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.

Performance

There was a time when the Volkswagen Atlas offered multiple powertrain options, but it now comes with just one. While this might be a disadvantage compared to some competitors, the current powertrain is still impressive. It features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Weaknesses

  • No sporty or electrified versions are available.

Strengths

  • Enjoyable to drive and highly capable.
  • Excellent value for money.
  • A head-turner wherever it goes.

Signature Element

What sets the Volkswagen Atlas apart isn't what's visible. Rather, it's the underlying elements borrowed from other luxury brands that elevate its design and engineering.

Final Thoughts

Volkswagen has hit a home run with the Atlas, which continues to grow in popularity. It's a more accessible product than the previous Touareg, making it widely appreciated by a diverse range of buyers. You no longer need to be a die-hard Volkswagen fan to love it. Honestly, I found it somewhat unremarkable at first, but after getting behind the wheel, I was pleasantly surprised.
